SERGEANT NPC CONTACT

[cartesio]

The Lodge is located on the hills near the town, large and strange. It contrasts a lot when compared to the rest of the town -- its gray and white walls are quite the change from the vibrant and colorful Cartesio, the plants and bushes that are planted on the lower levels of the Lodge only make the contrast more obvious. There are many windows, but no matter how much you look you don't see anyone passing behind them. If you didn't know better you'd think it was completely empty.

But it isn't empty. The Sergeant is there.

You won't get too far into the Lodge before you encounter the Sergeant. There he is in the lobby, standing in front of a door that leads deeper into the building. No matter at what time you come or what you do, he'll always be there, reading self-help books, or with a mirror, practicing his next speech/confrontation. When he's not facing all of you at once, he seems to be easier to talk with.

[Well, Franciscus is not quite sure what to feel about the fact that he's apparently been given the dress from last night to keep as a souvenir. Still, the fact that the casino exists makes a few questions come up. He walks in, holding up the card he was given.]

Is there any limit to these? It does not seem to have been mentioned, but the new existence of a casino does make me wonder.

No limit. Do whatever you want with that money, it's no skin off my nose.

[A nod] I suppose that is why the slot machines seem to give payouts more often than they are usually rigged for? Since there's no way they can bankrupt us anyways.

[cartesio]

I guess so? That casino has a pretty bad business sense. Small town people mentality, I suppose. [He shrugs] That was defined by them, not by me.

[Although you're right, yup, no bankrupcy!

[silvertongueheir]

[He nods, looking thoughtful.] Do they have parties like that often? Or are they simply trying to get us to stay?

[cartesio]

They're happy to have you around. This town is isolated from the rest of the world by a large expanse of ground. You're the first tourists in decades.

[silvertongueheir]

So, have tourists always been brought in from other worlds like this? Or was it different decades ago?

[cartesio]

No, just some random travelers from who knows where. [Nobody important] I'm just saying what I heard around once. The point is this town is so isolated you guys are the biggest news since a long time ago.

[silvertongueheir]

So that was before you came here yourself? Were you assigned the position here? [The townsfolk don't really seem to think of him as a previous visitor or anything, after all.]

[cartesio]

I was assigned the position before I arrived here. I had a long time to observe the town and try to find out some of its history, but there's a lot I don't know.

That's what happens when you're not told anything other than the bare basics of your task.

[The Sergeant doesn't sound happy at all, but also seems a bit...worried]

[silvertongueheir]

That must be frustrating. [He leans forward in a sympathetic manner.] Are the townspeople reluctant to share what they know with you?

[cartesio]

I haven't bothered to talk to them. All I know has been through observation, and sometimes being a bit too nosy for my own good, like that Keith kid. There are things about this town I'd like to forget.

[Banal things about some of the inhabitants' quirks, but he'd have liked to forget them anyway]

Really? Do you at least know why the townspeople often seem confused when people mention you?

[cartesio]

...I suppose it's because they don't see me often...

[He doesn't sound certain about that]

What do they say about me?

[silvertongueheir]

Mostly that you keep to yourself. But it seems that when pressed, they tend to forget the flow of the conversation, or that they were even talking about you.

[cartesio]

Don't you trail off and make stuff up when you talk about something you don't know?

[The Sergeant seems a bit defensive]

Well...even if I did, I wouldn't pretend to not remember the topic of the current conversation. That seems like something completely different, doesn't it?

[cartesio]

It does, when you put it like that. [He sure can't deny it] You're asking the wrong person, though. If you want to know why they're stumbling during a conversation, it'd make more sense to ask them, not me.

[Is this his way of trying to deflect? Maybe]

[silvertongueheir]

[...yeah, it kind of comes off like that. Still, it's not like Franciscus can read his mind about that.] Maybe I will. [And come back to pester the Sergeant with more questions.]
